Wood and Darkness – How is Prohaska preparing for the match against Pereira?

UFC star Jiri Prohaska has some quite unusual training methods. Known as the “Czech Samurai,” he is set to fight against Aleks Pereira, and apart from training in Brno, he is preparing in various ways.

Whether it is isolating himself in the woods or striking a wooden object 500 times a day, he believes these methods help strengthen not only his body but also his strikes. For instance, when it comes to wood, his method is to strike it with his hand. Often, he uses a wooden stick called makiwara.

“It helps the body, strike power, stability, and abdominal resistance,” explains Prohaska. In addition to that, he often trains with a large bell used for cattle, and he also uses methods that aid in developing his senses.

For example, this fighter spends a lot of time in the darkness, attempting to sharpen his senses and confront his demons.

“I don’t like to talk much about it; those are personal matters. You go to a place where time pauses, three or four days, no more, and darkness helps you understand who you are.”

Prohaska will be fighting Pereira at UFC 95 in New York at MSG for the vacant light heavyweight title. He has a record of 29-3-1 in MMA and three wins in the UFC.

Pereira returns to New York where he defeated Israel Adesanya last year and won the middleweight title, which he lost immediately in April in a rematch against Adesanya.
